Story

Limyra Ancient City is an important cultural heritage site located near Finike and is considered one of the oldest settlements in Lycia. The history of the city dates back to the 2nd millennium BC. Limyra gained significant political importance, especially when it became the center of the Persian satrap Pericles in the 4th century BC. Pericles' monumental tomb remains one of the most impressive structures in the city today. Within the city, there are important public buildings such as a theater, agora, aqueducts, and temple terraces. The region where Limyra is located is a very fertile plain, which has provided significant advantages both in terms of agriculture and urban life. However, this wetland has gradually become marshy, causing some parts of the city to collapse over time. When visitors enter the city, they experience a different atmosphere by walking on ancient stones intertwined with water. Limyra also holds great religious significance; ancient texts indicate that various cults of gods and goddesses were active here. Today, it is still possible to see fish swimming in the aqueducts at the entrance of the city and vegetation thriving among the ancient stones. Limyra offers visitors a unique experience with its archaeological and natural features. While walking in the city, you can imagine how the ancient Lycians lived in this fertile plain, the relationship between agricultural areas and the city, and the role of ancient water routes in daily life. Since some of the ruins are submerged today, Limyra is also a special research area for archaeologists.
