Antalya Clock Tower
Description
The historical clock tower, built during the Ottoman period, symbolizes the entrance of the city at the Kale Kapısı.
Story
The Antalya Clock Tower is one of the structures that adds character to the silhouette of the city, rising at the northern entrance of Kaleiçi, at a point known as the Kale Gate. Built during the reign of Sultan II. Abdülhamid in the early 1900s, the tower reflects the trend of clock towers that rose in various cities of the empire. The square-planned, solid stone structure serves both as a functional time indicator with its clock section at the top and as a monument marking the entrance to the city. Once integrated with the surrounding walls and bastions, the tower now stands like a window to the past amidst modern streets and shops. For many years, local tradespeople and residents adjusted their daily lives according to the clock in the tower; prayer times, shop opening and closing hours, and appointments were planned around this clock. Although it has undergone various repairs over time, the marks on its stone body and slightly worn corners silently narrate the century that has passed over the tower. Today, visitors gather in the small square around the tower; some take photographs, while others use it as a meeting point while walking to Kaleiçi after getting off the tram. In the evening, when the tower is illuminated, its historical texture becomes more pronounced, taking on a calm elegance that contrasts with the bustling city life around it. The Clock Tower may not appear as grand as colossal monuments; however, it symbolizes both a sentinel representing the city gate for Antalya and the urban continuity that stretches from the Ottoman era to the present. As you approach, you can imagine the small traces of time in the mortar between its stones, and the invisible memories left by countless gazes around the clock face above.
