Description

Story
The Ancient City of Ariassos is located near the high mountain passes to the west of Döşemealtı and is particularly recognized for its massive standing entrance gate. This monumental gate, with its three-arched structure, is considered one of the most aesthetically pleasing city entrances of the ancient world. The tower-like structures on either side of the gate and the decorations above the arches showcase the superior stone craftsmanship of the Roman period. The city has been one of the military and administrative centers of the Pisidia region. Ancient sources indicate that Ariassos formed alliances with other settlements in the area and particularly flourished during the Roman period. The remains of a bathhouse, agora, necropolis, and terrace structures are still discernible in the city. Due to its location, the region of Ariassos has historically served as a natural passage point, making it a strategic route for caravans and armies. According to a local legend, some people fleeing from wars in the area sought refuge in the mountains and lived for a time in the caves surrounding Ariassos. Although much of the city is in ruins today, the grandeur of the entrance gate remains captivating. The combination of the rugged geography of the Taurus Mountains and ancient architecture offers visitors an impressive experience. The city, being quiet and secluded, creates a sense of exploration intertwined with nature. As one wanders among the historical ruins, the sound of the wind and the sunlight striking the stones further highlight the traces of the past.
