Description
It is the Lycian city known for its magnificent terraces built on the mountainside.
Story
Arykanda Ancient City is one of the most interesting settlements of the Lycian civilization and is known for being built in terraces on a steep mountainside. This unique architectural arrangement provides both defensive advantages and offers a city life that overlooks the Mediterranean landscape. The history of the city dates back to the 2nd millennium BC; however, it experienced its most glorious period during the Hellenistic and Roman eras. Among the remarkable structures of Arykanda are the bath complex, council building, theater, stadium, and agora. The extraordinary preservation of its baths showcases the engineering aspect of ancient architecture. According to legends, the people of Arykanda loved luxury and were therefore known as the most 'indulgent' society of the ancient world. Roman writers even noted that the Arykandans were famous for their extravagance. The city continued to be partially used during the Byzantine period but was eventually abandoned over time. Today, it remains a historical treasure that preserves its silence due to being away from heavily touristic areas. As visitors wander among the terraces, they can feel both the traces of ancient life and the extraordinary view of the Finike valley.
