Description

It is the region of legendary fires, known since ancient times, where natural gases emerging from the slope burn continuously.

Story

Çıralı Yanartaş is a unique geological formation known for its continuously burning natural gas flames, located a few hundred meters above sea level on a rocky slope within the boundaries of Olympos Beydağları National Park. These eternal flames, known since ancient times, have been associated with the multi-headed monster called Chimera in Greek mythology; it was believed that this fire-breathing creature was slain here by the hero Bellerophontes while riding Pegasus. According to the legend, the monster was buried beneath the earth, but its breath still reaches the surface, creating these flames. In reality, methane and similar gases seeping from underground ignite spontaneously upon contact with oxygen, forming small but continuously burning flames. These fires, emerging from different points on the rocky surface, become much more pronounced in the darkness of night, offering visitors a captivating atmosphere. In ancient times, sailors used these flames as a kind of natural lighthouse; when approaching the shore in the dark, they adjusted their course upon seeing the lights of Yanartaş. Today, a night hike to Yanartaş has become almost a classic activity for backpackers, campers, and holidaymakers staying around Çıralı and Olympos. Following the path that opens into the forest, one ascends via stone steps, accompanied by the scents of pine and carob trees along the way. Upon reaching the top, you will see a crowd gathered around the flames emerging from the stones; some try to brew tea by the fire, while others share mythological stories. If the sky is clear, the stars, the dim lights of Çıralı below, and the ever-burning flames beside you combine to create an unforgettable night view.
