Finike Arykanda Terraces
Description
It is a terraced ancient city complex built on the hillside of the Lycian civilization.
Story
The terraced structure system of the Ancient City of Arykanda is one of the most striking examples reflecting the mastery of Lycian architecture in adapting to mountainous geography. On these terraces, which are intricately carved into the mountainside, one can find a theater, baths, an agora, a stadium, and residential areas. The arrangement of the terraces has ensured that the city receives sunlight in the most efficient way and is resilient against natural events such as earthquakes. Arykanda is known as one of the wealthiest cities in the Lycia region. According to legends, the people of Arykanda were fond of entertainment, which is why the city is home to numerous baths and social gathering places. The elevated view provided by the terraces offers a unique panorama of the Finike Plain and the Mediterranean. For centuries, the city has thrived as a strong center both economically and culturally, reaching great prosperity especially during the Roman period. Today, walking among the terraces of Arykanda, visitors are treated to an unforgettable atmosphere created by the wildflowers emerging from the stones, butterflies fluttering along the ancient paths, and the scent of pine trees. One of the most impressive features of the city is the massive stadium carved into the mountainside. The paths connecting the terraces create excellent opportunities for both walking and photography.
