Gelidonya Lighthouse
Description
A historic lighthouse overlooking the view of the Five Islands on the Lycian Way.
Story
Gelidonya Lighthouse is one of the most iconic structures along the Mediterranean coast, built in the 1930s. Its location has historically been seen as an extremely dangerous passage point for ships, resulting in numerous shipwrecks due to the many rocky headlands in the area and the currents around the Five Islands. Therefore, the construction of the lighthouse was a significant safety measure for maritime navigation. Before the lighthouse was built, the local people would light fires at night to prevent ships coming from the open sea from crashing into the rocks, trying to guide the sailors. Today, the area around the lighthouse is one of the essential routes for hikers on the Lycian Way. As the trail rises among the pine trees, the deep blue view of the Mediterranean accompanies the journey. Upon reaching the summit, the flawless sight of the Five Islands greets visitors. Although the lighthouse itself is not open to visitors, its location is one of the most impressive spots in Antalya to watch the sunset. As one of the first lighthouses of the Republican era, Gelidonya has become an important part of Antalya's culture with its historical and natural beauty.
