Story

Göynük Canyon is a narrow and deep valley shaped by water, located behind the Göynük town, which is part of Kemer, within the boundaries of Beydağları Coastal National Park. Situated right in the middle of one of the most popular stages of the Lycian Way, the canyon attracts both long-distance hikers and day-trippers interested in nature. The rocky walls rising from the pine forests narrow as you progress deeper into the canyon; natural pools at the bottom fill with turquoise waters. At first glance, these ponds appear calm, but they are actually depressions carved by strong currents over the years. Since the 2000s, the area has been organized for visitors, with equipment such as helmets and life jackets provided for safety at the entrance. Along the canyon, steel cables, walking paths, and wooden bridges have been used to create an exciting yet relatively safe route. According to a story told among the locals, in the past, the young people of Göynük village would jump into the coldest pond in the canyon to prove their courage, and whoever stayed in the water the longest would be chosen as the "bravest young man" of the year. Today, the same ponds are among the favorite spots for visitors looking to cool off in the summer heat. Göynük Canyon is not only an adventure park but also home to a rich ecosystem featuring cedar, red pine, and maquis species. As you progress through the canyon, the sounds of birds blend with the trickling water, completely making you forget the noise of the city. For photographers, the steep walls rising from the narrow valley offer dramatic frames. When you reach the exit of the canyon, the fatigue you feel often gives way to the question, "Should I come back again tomorrow?"
