Natural Area

Description

A stone watchtower with a round body, believed to have been built during the Roman period, overlooking the sea.

Story

Hıdırlık Tower, located at the southern edge of Kaleiçi, dominates one of Antalya's most impressive views with its position right on the cliffs. The tower, rising on a square base with a cylindrical body, was likely built during the 2nd century AD in the Roman Empire period. Archaeologists have differing opinions about the function of the structure: some researchers argue that it served as a watchtower and defense tower, while others suggest it functioned as a mausoleum or lighthouse. However, everyone agrees that the tower is situated at a strategic point, overlooking the harbor and the open sea. Over time, the structure has been used during the Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods, undergoing various repairs in different eras; today, the traces on its body reflect this multi-layered history. Although the internal stairs leading to the tower are no longer open to visitors, the surrounding observation terraces allow you to see the Antalya Bay from a bird's-eye view. Especially during sunset hours, when the sky is bathed in red and the silhouette of the tower merges with it, a postcard-like view emerges. For the local people, Hıdırlık Tower is not just a historical structure, but also a meeting point, the starting point of walking routes, and a symbolic corner where the city meets the sea. Sitting in the nearby park area and looking out at the sea from the cliffs, it is not hard to imagine Roman soldiers observing the horizon from the same spot centuries ago or trade ships approaching the shore. Today, the tower continues to be an indispensable scene for photographers, couples having engagement shoots, and day-trippers, remaining one of the most featured silhouettes in Antalya's postcards.
