Karain Cave
Description
It is one of the largest natural caves in Turkey and an important prehistoric settlement.
Story
Karain Cave is considered one of the oldest human settlements in Anatolia, with findings that indicate a history of 500,000 years. With this feature, it is one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey. The cave served as a center for shelter, hunting, and daily life activities for humans during prehistoric times. Numerous stone tools, bone fragments, animal fossils, and human remains have been uncovered from the Paleolithic period onwards. In this respect, Karain is recognized as one of the few prehistoric sites not only in Turkey but also in the world. The cave has three main galleries, which were used as living spaces in different periods. Its geological structure, the depth of its inner corridors, and its natural ventilation system make the cave both mysterious and impressive. According to legends, Karain was a sacred cave where rituals were performed in ancient times; it is said that spring rituals were particularly conducted here. Excavation works have been ongoing without interruption since 1946, and new findings are presented to the scientific community each year. The natural landscape surrounding the cave is also quite striking, offering a tranquil atmosphere among the high cliffs. Visitors can feel the traces of prehistoric human life as they walk through the cave, almost taking a journey through time while pondering the purposes of the marks seen on the walls.
