Karatay Madrasa was built during the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate in 1251, during the reign of Izzeddin Keykavus II, by Vizier Celaleddin Karatay. The madrasa served as an important educational institution at that time, particularly for teaching Hadith and Tafsir sciences. Although its architect is unknown, it is considered one of the finest examples of Seljuk architecture. The structure is built of cut stone and exhibits typical features of the courtyard and iwan madrasa type. It is particularly notable for its monumental portal and the tile decorations in its interior. The geometric and floral motifs on the portal represent the pinnacle of Seljuk stone carving. The madrasa's courtyard has a four-iwan plan and features a pool in the center. The main iwan served as the prayer hall and classroom section of the madrasa. The tiles in the interior are concentrated especially in the dome transitions and iwan walls. These tiles are among the most beautiful examples of Seljuk tile art, featuring geometric patterns and Kufic script dominated by turquoise and dark blue colors. Karatay Madrasa continued its educational activities for some time during the Ottoman period but gradually lost its importance. Today, it serves as the Tile Works Museum.
