Köprülü Canyon National Park
Description
It is a deep canyon and national park famous for rafting and outdoor sports, stretching along the Köprüçay River.
Story
Köprülü Canyon National Park is a magnificent natural wonder located in the east of Antalya, within the borders of Manavgat, shaped by the deep ravines carved by the Köprüçay River. Declared a national park in the 1970s, this area is considered one of Turkey's most important conservation areas due to its biological diversity and the cultural heritage it harbors. The canyon walls, which extend for approximately 14 kilometers, reach heights of over 100 meters in places, making you feel as if you are trapped between giant rock walls while walking in the valley. The river creates a cool atmosphere even in the summer heat with its clear and cold water flowing from the Taurus Mountains. One of the most well-known symbols of Köprülü Canyon is the Oluk Bridge, which dates back to the Roman period. This bridge, with its stone arches standing for centuries, was an important crossing point on the road to the ancient city of Selge. According to a local legend, during the construction of the bridge, the builders swore that they would throw themselves into the river if the bridge did not hold; once the bridge stood firm, they abandoned this vow and left a sacrificial stone by the riverbank. Today, visitors experience both adrenaline and the sight of birds of prey like eagles and vultures soaring along the canyon walls while navigating the river's turbulent waters in rafting boats. The surrounding villages bear traces of the Yörük culture with their traditional stone and wooden architecture. Nowadays, the region has become one of the most vibrant spots in Mediterranean tourism, offering activities such as hiking, camping, photography, and especially rafting tours; however, despite all this activity, when you sit alone in a corner by the river and listen to the sound of the water, you can easily feel the timeless tranquility of the canyon.
