Description

It is the ancient city of Lycia famous for its rock tombs and Saint Nicholas.

Story

Myra Ancient City is one of the most impressive centers of the Lycian civilization, particularly known for its rock tombs and large theater. The history of the city dates back to the 5th century BC and it held an important position in the Lycian League. Its most famous figure is Saint Nicholas, who served in Demre; this historical person, known today as Santa Claus, holds a significant place in the religious and cultural heritage of Myra. The rock tombs in the city reflect the beliefs of the Lycians regarding the afterlife; the tombs are typically carved in the shape of houses, designed so that the soul of the deceased can return 'home' without being lost. Myra's theater suffered significant damage from an earthquake and was later restored during the Roman period. Ancient sources mention that Myra had the most fertile lands in the region and was a pioneer in agricultural production. The city became the center of a bishopric during the Byzantine period but lost its importance after the Arab invasions. Over the centuries, the Demre Plain, filled with alluvium, has closed off Myra's ancient harbor, leaving the city completely inland. Today, due to the extraordinary landscape formed by the rock tombs and the legacy of Saint Nicholas, Myra is a major attraction for both history enthusiasts and religious tourism.
