An important Byzantine basilica where the tomb of Saint Nicholas is located, which is now open to visitors as a museum.

Story

The Santa Claus Church holds great significance as the place where Saint Nicholas, the historical basis of the world-famous Santa Claus figure, served as a bishop and was buried. This saint, who bears the name of the church, served as the bishop of Myra in the 4th century and became renowned for his philanthropy and especially his generosity towards children. After the death of Saint Nicholas, the church was initially built on top of a more modest structure, and in the 6th century, during the reign of Emperor Justinian, it was constructed as a grand basilica. Over the centuries, the structure has grown with various additions, domes, and side chapels, housing beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture. While wandering inside, some of the frescoes adorning the walls still retain their vibrant colors; these frescoes depict the miracles of the saint, scenes from his life, and narratives from the Bible. The bones of Saint Nicholas, taken to the city of Bari in Italy in the 11th century, add a dramatic dimension to the story of the structure; nevertheless, the church has continued to be an important pilgrimage site for the Orthodox world for centuries. During the Ottoman period, it was at times buried underground, filled with floods and alluvium, and underwent significant restoration in the 19th century, particularly with the support of the Russians. Today, the church is open to visitors as a museum and is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List. As you enter the courtyard and wander through the corridors, small chapels, and around the apse, you can feel the traces of layered history lying beneath the stone pavements. Thus, this modest corner of Demre becomes a symbolic center where both the legend of Santa Claus and the intersection of the Eastern and Western Christian worlds converge.
