Story
Olympos was one of the important cities of the Lycian League, believed to have been founded in the 2nd century BC. The city took its name from the nearby Mount Tahtalı (ancient Mount Olympos). It was one of the six cities in the Lycian League that had three voting rights, which indicates its political and economic importance. Olympos continued its existence during the Roman Empire period and played a key role in Mediterranean trade, especially thanks to its port. However, in the 1st century BC, it was subjected to attacks by Cilician pirates and fell into their hands for a period. After the Roman general Servilius Isauricus defeated the pirates, the city came under Roman control again. Settlement continued during the Byzantine period, but over time it lost its importance due to Arab raids and natural disasters. There is evidence that it was used as a base by Venetians, Genoese, and Knights of Rhodes in the Middle Ages. Among the ruins visible today are a theater, baths, temples, agoras, monumental tombs, and a Byzantine basilica.
