Patara Ancient City
Description
It is a large ancient city that was one of the capitals of the Lycian League.
Story
Patara Ancient City is one of the most important centers of the Lycian civilization and is historically known as the capital of the Lycian League. The city is famous for having one of the most democratic council systems of the ancient world; the grand council building still stands impressively today. Patara is also known as the birthplace of Saint Nicholas, who is recognized as Santa Claus. Patara Harbor was one of the busiest trade centers of the ancient period, playing a critical role particularly in grain and ship trade. Over time, the silting of the harbor diminished the city's significance. One of the most interesting structures in the city is the massive Roman lighthouse; it is believed to be one of the oldest lighthouses in the ancient world. Additionally, the theater, bath complexes, main street, warehouses, and grain silos contribute to the rich texture of the city. Patara is notable not only for its history but also for its natural beach. Its 12-kilometer-long vast coastline is a nesting area for Mediterranean loggerhead turtles and is therefore under special protection. The combination of the ancient city and the natural beach gives Patara a unique atmosphere. With the restoration efforts carried out today, the council building has regained much of its former glory, making Patara a unique destination that offers both history and nature to modern visitors.
