Perge, located approximately 18 km east of Antalya, within the borders of the Aksu district, is one of the most important ancient cities of the Pamphylia region. It is believed to have been founded by the Achaeans who came to the region after the Trojan War in the 12th century BC. Perge became an important center during the Hellenistic period, gaining further strength especially with the conquests of Alexander the Great in 333 BC. After Alexander's death, the city came under the rule of the Seleucid Empire, then the Kingdom of Pergamon, and finally, in 133 BC, it fell under the control of the Roman Empire. During the Roman period, Perge experienced its golden age, with many magnificent structures such as a theater, stadium, agora, baths, and monumental fountains being built. One of the most striking structures of the city is the Perge Stadium, one of the largest stadiums in Anatolia with a capacity of approximately 15,000 people. In addition, the Hellenistic Gate and the Roman Gate at the entrance of the city are monumental structures that impress visitors. Perge also holds an important place in Christian history; it is one of the cities visited by Saint Paul during his first missionary journey.
