Description

It is the Lycian city famous for its ports and ancient ruins intertwined with the sea.

Story

Phaselis Ancient City is a Lycian city located within the borders of Kemer district, which became one of the most important trade centers of antiquity thanks to its three natural harbors. It is believed to have been founded by colonists from Rhodes in the 600s BC. Because the city was situated at the heart of Mediterranean trade routes, it held the economic pulse of the region for many years. With the transition to the Roman period, Phaselis grew even larger, offering a rich urban life with its theater, baths, agora structures, and aqueducts. Today, the details that attract the most attention from visitors are the massive columned road stretching along both sides of the main street and the beaches located just south of this road. Phaselis is also notable for its natural beauty; being situated between the forest and the sea makes it one of the most photogenic ancient sites in the Mediterranean. Another interesting legend of the city is related to the cult of Artemis. According to legend, the people of Phaselis performed hunting ceremonies according to specific rituals to avoid angering the goddess. The city lost its significance during the Byzantine period and was completely abandoned with the increase of Arab raids. Today, it is considered one of the most special stops in Antalya, thanks to its archaeological richness and the atmosphere that integrates with the sea.
