Red Tower
Description
It is an octagonal defense and observation tower from the Seljuk period.
Story
The Red Tower (Kızıl Kule) is a monumental Seljuk structure that has become a symbol of Alanya. Built in 1226 by Sultan I. Alaeddin Keykubad, the tower was constructed by the famous architect Ebü’l Feth. The reason the tower is called 'red' is due to the reddish-colored bricks used in its construction. The Red Tower was designed as the main defense center to protect Alanya Harbor and the shipyard. Its octagonal plan and five-story structure reflect the architectural genius of the period. The cistern system inside has made the tower resistant to long sieges. Additionally, it is the most critical point of the main defense line that connects to Alanya Castle through the walls. According to legends, when the tower was completed, Keykubad awarded the architect with a great prize to appreciate his talent, and some sources even state that he issued an order for the architect to be specially hosted in Alanya. During the Ottoman period, the tower continued to be used for customs control, harbor surveillance, and military observation. Today, it houses an ethnography museum that showcases Alanya's historical living culture to visitors. When you ascend the tower, the view of the harbor, the shipyard, and Alanya Castle is revealed in all its splendor. The acoustic structure is also interesting; even a soft sound can echo in the upper floor of the tower. For hundreds of years, the security of maritime trade has been ensured under the watch of this tower.
