Sapadere Canyon
Description
It is a cool and narrow mountain canyon located to the east of Alanya, explored via wooden walking platforms.
Story
Sapadere Canyon is an impressive natural passage hidden in the slopes of the Taurus Mountains, east of Alanya city center, shaped by the joint efforts of water and wind. For many years, the canyon was seen by the local people merely as a mountain path and a water source, but in the early 2000s, it was opened to tourism with the construction of wooden walking platforms and observation terraces. Today, visitors can walk along piers anchored to the rocks with steel constructions, advancing deep into the narrow valley. The waterfalls and natural pools located at the bottom of the canyon provide a natural air conditioning effect, especially in the summer months; in some places, the water temperature is almost icy. The chestnut, plane trees, and various types of maquis that grow around the canyon showcase the region's rich flora. The sounds of birds and the echo of water multiply between the narrow walls, accompanying the walk. The village of Sapadere is located near the entrance of the canyon and offers a separate exploration opportunity for those curious about traditional village life. According to an old legend, it was believed that genies lived deep inside the canyon; therefore, villagers used to avoid this area after dark. Today, of course, such fears have disappeared; on the contrary, the canyon fills with nature lovers from early morning until the afternoon. For photography enthusiasts, the hours close to noon, when the light filters over the valley, are the moments when they capture the turquoise tones of the water best. Sapadere Canyon stands out as a strong natural alternative, demonstrating that Alanya is not just about the sea-sand-sun trio.
Visit Tips
- An entrance fee is charged per person at the canyon; it is advisable to check the prices, which may vary by season, before going.
- Since the walking path consists of metal and wooden platforms, prefer flat-soled, comfortable shoes.
- Remember that the water is very cold; if you plan to swim in natural pools, take a towel and spare clothes with you.
- Especially during the summer months, the midday hours can be crowded; around 10:00 AM is ideal for a more peaceful visit.
