Story
Selge Ancient City was founded on a steep and mountainous terrain in the upper basin of the Köprüçay (Eurymedon) River. The city's history dates back to the 5th century BC, and according to Strabo, it was founded by the Chalcedonians who came to the region after the Trojan War. Due to its geographical location, Selge provided natural protection against external attacks, thus maintaining its independence for a long time. The city experienced its most brilliant period during the Hellenistic era, primarily sustaining itself through agriculture and animal husbandry. It gained fame for its products such as olive oil, wine, and honey. Selge continued to be important during the Roman Empire, and in the Byzantine period, with the spread of Christianity, it became a bishopric center. Among the remains of the city that have survived to the present day are a theater, agora, stadium, temples, and a necropolis. Its well-preserved theater, in particular, showcases Selge's architectural and cultural richness. With a capacity of approximately 10,000 people, the theater was one of the significant structures of its time. The aqueducts and fountains that supplied water to the city are also noteworthy. Due to its mountainous and challenging terrain, Selge Ancient City remains partially difficult to access even today.
