Story
The Ancient City of Side, located to the east of Antalya, has a fascinating history and is known as one of the most important port cities in Mediterranean history. The name of the city means 'pomegranate' in Luwian, an ancient Anatolian language, and has become its symbol. Founded in the 7th century BC, the city gained significant economic power from early on due to its location at the crossroads of trade routes. Thanks to its port, it exported grain, wine, and olive oil, and for a time, slave trade became one of the fundamental elements of Side's economy. After the arrival of Alexander the Great, the city interacted intensively with Hellenistic culture and then reached its peak during the Roman period. The magnificent Roman theater, colonnaded streets, agora, and baths that still stand today bear the traces of this era. The Temple of Apollo, in particular, creates a captivating silhouette at sunset; according to many legends, cult ceremonies associated with sea gods were held here. Side was an important episcopal center during the Byzantine period; however, it was gradually abandoned due to Arab invasions and earthquakes. Today, it offers a unique combination of history and sea as both an open-air museum and a modern holiday resort. While wandering through the streets of the city, it is still possible to hear the breath of history among the ancient stones.
