St. Nicholas Church is considered the place where Saint Nicholas, who holds great importance for the Christian world, served as a bishop and was buried after his death. Saint Nicholas was born in Patara in 270 AD and served as a bishop in Demre (then known as Myra). Known as the protector of sailors, children, and the poor, Saint Nicholas is also the inspiration for today's Santa Claus figure. The church was first built shortly after Saint Nicholas's death in the 4th century AD.
