Termessos Ancient City
Description
It is an ancient city located among the mountains, known for its naturally sheltered structure.
Story
Termessos, located on the steep cliffs of Güllük Mountain to the north of Antalya, is one of the most challenging ancient cities to access in Anatolia. Founded by the people of Pisidia, the city is one of the rare settlements that has never been conquered throughout history due to its geographical structure. Even Alexander the Great attempted to besiege Termessos in 333 BC, but the city's natural defenses were so strong that Alexander had to retreat. This event has turned into a legend that the people of Termessos proudly recount. The city features numerous structures, ranging from a theater to an agora, and from royal tombs to cisterns. The theater boasts a unique view set against the mountainside; from the remaining steps, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the Taurus Mountains. Another characteristic of Termessos is the uniqueness of the flora and fauna in the region. Since it is located within national park boundaries, it hosts endemic plant species and wild goats. The city was completely abandoned towards the end of the Byzantine period, likely due to a decrease in water sources and the challenging living conditions in the area. Today, the city is a favorite stop for nature hikers and history enthusiasts, providing visitors with a sense of journeying back to ancient times due to its tranquility and untouched nature.
