Üçağız (Teimioussa) Lycia Necropolis
Description
In the tranquil village of Üçağız in the Kekova Bay, Lycian sarcophagi and remnants of an ancient harbor spread along the shore.
Story
Üçağız, while it appears as a small and tranquil fishing village in its modern form, is actually built on the ruins of the ancient city of Teimioussa. As you walk along the village's coastline, it is possible to see Lycian sarcophagi scattered right by the shore; some are found by the sea, while others emerge between the narrow streets. These sarcophagi indicate that the region has been an important settlement since the 4th century BC. In ancient times, Teimioussa was part of the trade and maritime transport network along with other cities in the Kekova region; it served as a shelter for small boats, especially thanks to its harbor. Today, Üçağız's natural harbor still serves the same purpose; it is a departure point for Kekova tours and a safe haven for boats during the winter months. As you wander through the village, the rising sarcophagus lids among the stone houses create an atmosphere where daily life intertwines with history. Some of the graves bear inscriptions in Lycian and Greek; these tell the names, statuses, and connections of the people of that time to the city. When you walk a little inland from the shore, you encounter more graves and remnants of walls that have been damaged over time among the olive groves. On a quiet evening, the orange light of the sunset that envelops the village combines both the boats gliding on the sea and the sarcophagi on the hillside in the same frame. In this way, Üçağız is a quieter and more profound historical stop away from the noise of the Kekova region; here, you can experience both a tranquil village life and the traces of the Lycian civilization simultaneously.
