Artvin Castle (Livane Castle)
Description
Artvin Castle, located on a steep rock by the Çoruh River in Artvin city center, is a medieval structure that has held strategic importance throughout history.
Story
Artvin Castle, also known as Livane Castle, is a historical structure built on a steep and natural rock on the western bank of the Çoruh River, in the city center of Artvin, in Turkey's Black Sea Region. Although the exact date of the castle's construction is unknown, the general consensus is that it was built for defensive purposes during the Bagratid Kingdom in the 9th or 10th centuries, specifically during the reign of King Ashot I or II Kukh. Positioned to strategically control the Çoruh Valley, the castle played a key role in the struggles for dominance between Georgian, Seljuk, and Ottoman forces in the region. The castle was incorporated into the Ottoman Empire's territories after Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror's campaign in 1462 and subsequently during the conquests preceding Sultan Selim I's Çaldıran Campaign in 1514, undergoing repair and reinforcement during these periods. Architecturally, the castle has an irregular plan adapting to the natural terrain, featuring high walls, watchtowers, and remains of structures such as a mosque, cistern, and barracks within its inner courtyard. Its walls, reaching up to approximately 18-20 meters, and its challenging location clearly demonstrate its historical defensive power. Although a large part of the castle is not standing today, its main curtain walls, some bastions, and inner structure remains can still be seen. An important stop for visitors to understand Artvin's historical fabric, the castle offers a unique panoramic view of Artvin city center, the Çoruh River, and the surrounding mountainous landscapes from its commanding position. Although accessing the castle requires a somewhat steep climb despite its proximity to the city center, the panoramic view and historical atmosphere encountered upon reaching the summit are well worth the effort. Especially during sunrise or sunset, the castle's former grandeur blending with the surrounding nature offers fascinating photo opportunities. Artvin Castle, both as an example of military architecture and as a symbol testifying to the region's challenging historical journey, is a serene discovery point that takes its visitors back in time.
