Story
Nestled among the steep mountains of Artvin, overlooking the winding course of the Çoruh River and the city from above, Atatepe proudly hosts the monumental statue of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. Completed and opened to visitors in 2012, this impressive structure was designed and brought to life by sculptor Eray Okkan under the initiative of the Artvin Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The statue itself stands 22 meters tall, and together with its 35-meter pedestal, reaches a total height of approximately 57 meters, making it one of the largest Atatürk statues in Turkey. This magnificent bronze sculpture depicts Atatürk with a determined and wise stance, pointing forward, symbolizing his vision that guided modern Turkey. Upon arriving at Atatepe, visitors are met not only with the statue's captivating grandeur but also with the unique panoramic views it offers. From here, the lush greenery of Artvin city, the blue waters of the Çoruh River, and the impressive silhouettes of the Kafkasör Mountains unfold like a painting. Especially during sunset, the view of the statue's silhouette and the valley under a sky painted with fiery colors creates postcard-perfect moments. Atatepe is more than just a monument; it is an important symbol showcasing Artvin's modern face and its allegiance to republican values. This spot offers visitors opportunities for photography, admiring the scenery, and spending peaceful moments immersed in nature, while also leaving a deep impression of the region's cultural and historical identity. The small cafeteria and gift shops within the facility are additional elements that complete the visitor experience. Due to its high altitude, the area can sometimes be windy, so weather conditions should be considered when planning a visit. Atatepe, a must-see for anyone passing through Artvin, promises an unforgettable experience, offering both a visual feast and historical significance.
