Story
Borçka Karagöl, located within the borders of Artvin's Borçka district, approximately 1400 meters above sea level, is a natural formation in the form of a landslide dam lake. The lake's formation occurred in the early 1800s when a large landslide near today's Klaskur Plateau closed off the valley floor. This natural disaster fundamentally changed the region's geography, paving the way for the emergence of a unique lake ecosystem. Surrounded by dense forests, Karagöl offers a visual feast to its visitors, especially in autumn, with its leaves displaying a thousand shades of yellow, red, and green. Among the tree species around the lake, spruce, fir, beech, and pine trees are abundant. This rich vegetation also hosts many wild animals. Mammals such as bears, wolves, jackals, and foxes, as well as various bird species, can be observed around the lake. Borçka Karagöl was declared a 'Borçka Karagöl Nature Park' by a Cabinet decision in 2002 and taken under protection.
