Dörtkilise Monastery, rising in a prominent position overlooking the lush valley of the Çoruh River near the village of Dörtkilise in Artvin's Yusufeli district, is an important part of the region's rich historical fabric. Believed to have been built in the 9th or 10th centuries, this monastery is among the valuable structures that have survived from the artistic and religious heritage of the historical Georgian kingdoms known as Tao-Klarjeti. It is rumored that the monastery takes its name from the four main churches within the complex, but today the main church structure is usually referred to by this name. Architecturally, the main church, with its basilical plan, showcases the regional proficiency in cut stone masonry.
