Story
Located in İşhan village, a part of Yusufeli district in Artvin, in the valley of one of the branches of the Çoruh River, Ishkhan Church Mosque is an important structure reflecting the region's rich history and architectural heritage. Originally built as a church, this monumental building belongs to the Bagratid Kingdom period, particularly thought to have started in the 7th century and largely completed in the 10th century. The earliest written information about the church dates back to the 8th century, and it is known to have initially served as a monastic church, and later as an important episcopal center and cathedral. Architecturally, Ishkhan Church is considered one of the most brilliant examples of Georgian architecture. The church, which has a cruciform plan with a dome, stands out with its three-nave basilica layout. Especially the monumental entrance gate on the western facade, with its rich stone carvings, floral and geometric motifs, and reliefs depicting scenes from the Bible, showcases the artistic mastery of the period. Inside the structure, original fresco remnants can still be seen, although they have been damaged over time. With the Ottoman Empire's dominance in the region, in the 16th century or later periods, the church was converted into a mosque. During this conversion, a minaret was added to the structure, Islamic worship elements such as a mihrab and minbar were incorporated, and the frescoes were covered, adapting the interior for Islamic prayer. Still used as a mosque today, Ishkhan Church Mosque is a rare and impressive example of how architectural heritage can transform through the coexistence of different faiths and cultures. Visitors can closely examine the evolution of this historical structure, both as a church and a mosque, its architectural layers from different periods, and its masterful stone craftsmanship. Surrounded by the natural beauties of the Çoruh Valley, Ishkhan offers a serene and thought-provoking experience for travelers interested in history and art. The fact that the structure stands and is actively used indicates it is a living heritage passed down from the past to the present. Despite the region's challenging geography, the preservation and transmission of this monumental structure to future generations are of great importance. Visitors can discover the historical depth and artistic details of the building, while also enjoying the surrounding natural beauties. Ishkhan Church Mosque is not only a place of worship but also an important symbol of Artvin's cultural identity.
