Story

Hidden deep within the lush Papart Valley in Şavşat district of Artvin, Tibeti Church, which has managed to stand despite the ravages of time, invites visitors into the mystical atmosphere of the Middle Ages. Built in the 10th century during the Georgian Bagratid Kingdom, this magnificent structure was once the main church of Tibeti Monastery, one of the most important religious centers in the region. Although reaching the church requires a pleasant walk starting from Viranşehir village of Şavşat and continuing along a path full of natural beauties, this effort is amply rewarded by the unique location and historical texture of the monument. The church, which has a three-nave basilica plan, exhibits one of the finest examples of cut stone craftsmanship. Its architectural details and the remains of frescoes on its walls reflect the artistic and religious understanding of the period. The apse section and the stone carvings on its exterior facade, in particular, show how magnificent the church once was. Unfortunately, although its roof has collapsed over time and its interiors have been largely destroyed, the surviving walls and arch remains are powerful witnesses to the past. Tibeti Church, beyond being just an architectural structure, reveals the rich history of the region, Georgian-Byzantine cultural interaction, and the traces of Christian heritage in this geography. Visitors here have the opportunity to listen to the whispers of the past and to integrate with the peaceful and untouched nature of the Papart Valley. While wandering among the ruins of the church, it is possible to imagine the prayers of the old monks, the daily life of the monastery, and the strategic importance of the region. Tibeti Church is a deeply meaningful stop that should not be missed for every traveler who wants to discover the cultural and natural riches of Artvin. This is a timeless place where history and nature go hand in hand, touching the human soul.
