Story

The Ancient City of Alabanda, situated on a hill overlooking the fertile Büyük Menderes Plain within the borders of Aydın's Çine district, has been an important center throughout history. This city experienced a brilliant development in the 3rd century BCE, particularly during the Hellenistic period, and was one of the significant cities of the Carian region. It is rumored that its name comes from Alabanda, the wife of Car, the Carian King, or that it was an epithet for King Car himself. The city held great strategic and commercial importance during the Seleucid Empire. It continued its existence after coming under the rule of the Roman Empire but lost its significance during the Byzantine period and was eventually abandoned. Today, Alabanda offers visitors magnificent traces of the past with its ancient theater, bouleuterion (council house), the remains of the temples of Apollo and Zeus, its agora, gymnasium, baths, and necropolis. The particularly well-preserved theater reveals the socio-cultural structure of the city, while the bouleuterion provides important clues about the city's political life. The strong city walls and aqueducts surrounding the city demonstrate the engineering skills of the era and the city's defensive capabilities. Alabanda is also known for its mastery in marble craftsmanship; the rich marble quarries in the region contributed to the city's architecture and economy. Excavation work is still ongoing, and new structures and artifacts are being unearthed every day. This ancient city is a unique stop for those who wish to journey into the depths of history amidst the tranquility of nature. Visitors have the opportunity to imagine the lifestyle of the period while exploring the ancient ruins along the walking paths and experience an unforgettable journey in this mysterious corner of Caria. Especially during spring and autumn, you can enjoy the Mediterranean climate and make a peaceful discovery among the ruins.
