Named after Nysa, the wife of its founder Seleucid King Antiochus I Soter, the city holds a significant place in history as the birthplace of the ancient geographer Strabo. The Kestane Stream (anciently known as Diphylos) bisects the city, and the unique connection via bridges and a massive tunnel built over this natural divide makes Nysa an exceptional example of urban planning. Among the most impressive structures Nysa offers visitors are the well-preserved theatre, bouleuterion (council house), agora, library, and gymnasium. The theatre, in particular, has many of its steps still intact and once hosted the artistic events of its era.
