Ancient City of Priene
Description
Priene, located within the borders of Söke district in Aydın, is one of the ancient cities that best reflects the grid-planned architecture of the Hellenistic period.
Story
The Ancient City of Priene, founded on the southern slopes of Mount Mycale (Samsun) near Güllübahçe in Söke district of Aydın, is one of the most striking examples of Hellenistic urban planning and architecture. Although its connection to the sea was eventually severed by the alluvium carried by the Büyük Menderes River, it was a strategic port city dominating the Latmian Gulf in ancient times. The most distinctive feature of the city is its regular urban plan, known as the "grid plan," developed by Hippodamus. Despite the steep terrain, streets intersect at right angles, forming rectangular blocks, which makes Priene a testament to the engineering and planning genius of its era. The most magnificent structure in Priene is the Temple of Athena Polias, designed by the famous architect Pytheos and built in the Ionian order. The remains of the temple mark the religious and cultural center of the city. The city also features a well-preserved theater with a capacity of approximately 5000 people, the Bouleuterion used as a public assembly house, the Agora (market), the Temple of Zeus, and various remains of gymnasiums and residences. Priene's hillside location offers visitors breathtaking panoramic views of the Büyük Menderes Plain and the Samsun Mountains opposite. These views highlight the city's strategic importance and natural beauty. The city continued to exist during the Persian and Roman periods but was eventually abandoned due to the silting of its harbor by the Menderes River and its distance from the sea, leading to a decline in trade. Unearthed through excavations conducted by German archaeologists, Priene today offers visitors a unique experience with its calm and peaceful atmosphere. While wandering through the steep streets of the ancient city, it is possible to gain a deep understanding of daily life, architecture, and advanced urban planning of the Hellenistic period. Every corner holds clues about how the ancient world once thrived here, transporting the visitor thousands of years back in time.
