Hisar is a settlement of historical and cultural importance located in the Didim district of Aydın.
Story
Hisar is a region in the Didim district of Aydın with a rich history stretching from ancient times to the present day. Although the name of the region is generally associated with a castle or fortification, in the specific case of Didim Hisar, this name refers more to a settlement or a geographical location. It is thought to have had strategic importance in ancient times due to its proximity to Didyma, the sacred area of Miletus. Surface surveys and limited excavations in the region have revealed ceramic fragments and architectural remains from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Especially during the Byzantine period, it is considered probable that small fortifications or watchtowers may have existed to protect the coastline and ensure connection with inland areas. However, there is no definitive archaeological evidence yet that the name 'Hisar' directly indicates a large castle structure. It is rather thought that the region may have taken this name due to its high and protected structure. It is known that it was also used as a settlement during the Ottoman period and agricultural activities were carried out. Today, Hisar is one of the developing regions of Didim, and in addition to modern buildings, it also carries traces of the past.
