Kuşadası Caravanserai was built in the early 17th century, in 1618, by Grand Vizier Öküz Mehmet Pasha. The Pasha had this caravanserai constructed both as an accommodation and trade center and to ensure the security of Kuşadası. The structure held great strategic importance due to its location on significant trade routes of the period. The caravanserai has a nearly square plan with a courtyard and is designed as a two-story building. The lower floors were generally used as storage and stables, while the upper floors were reserved for the accommodation of travelers and merchants. Its walls are quite thick and sturdy, indicating that the structure could also be used for defensive purposes. The entrance gate is quite monumental and features decorations reflecting the architectural characteristics of the era. Cut stone was used in the construction of the building, and it bears the classical features of Ottoman architecture. The caravanserai played a central role in the social and economic life of Kuşadası for centuries. During periods of vibrant trade, it became a stopping point for caravans coming from Anatolia and merchants arriving by sea.
