Magnesia Ad Maeandrum is an ancient city located on the banks of the Great Maeander River, within the borders of the Germencik district of Aydın. The city's foundation dates back to the 11th century BC, and according to legend, it was founded by the Magnetes who came from Thessaly. Due to its geographical location, Magnesia held strategic importance for both agriculture and trade, experiencing great prosperity, especially during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. One of the most well-known structures in the city is the Temple of Artemis, built in the 4th century BC and dedicated to Artemis Leukophryene. This temple is considered the fourth largest temple in the ancient world and was designed by the architect Hermogenes. The temple is one of the finest examples of the Ionic order and, together with its surrounding sacred area, formed an important religious center. Magnesia also features well-preserved remains of a theater, agora, odeon, stadium, and city walls. The stadium was one of the largest in the ancient world, hosting gladiatorial contests and athletic competitions.
