Miletus Ancient City
Description
Miletus Ancient City is one of Ionia's most significant cities, known for hosting developments in philosophy, science, and art, and stands out with its rich historical remains.
Story
Miletus Ancient City is located within the borders of Didim district of Aydın, near the ancient delta of the Great Menderes River. As one of Ionia's most brilliant cities, Miletus became an important port and trade center in ancient times thanks to its geographical location. The city's history dates back to the 2nd millennium BC, experiencing its golden age particularly in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. During this period, Miletus hosted prominent philosophers such as Thales, Anaximander, and Anaximenes, becoming one of the places where the foundations of Western philosophy and science were laid. It also gained influence in Mediterranean and Black Sea trade by establishing numerous colonies. The remains of the city that survive today are spread over a large area, predominantly featuring structures from the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Visitors can explore the well-preserved theater, one of the most magnificent structures of the city. With a capacity of approximately 15,000 people, this theater is a vivid testament to Miletus's social and cultural life. Breathtaking views of the Menderes Plain and the former location of the ancient harbor can be observed from the upper tiers of the theater. Other important structures such as the agoras, bouleuterion (assembly building), Roman baths, and Faustina Baths reveal the city's wealth and daily life. The Faustina Baths, in particular, attract attention with their mosaics and marble decorations reflecting the splendor of the era. The silting up of Miletus's harbor over time caused the city to lose its commercial importance, eventually leading to its abandonment. Today, visitors wandering among the ruins of this great metropolis can imagine the intellectual and commercial genius of antiquity. Excavation works are still ongoing, and each new discovery sheds light on Miletus's deep history. Visiting the ancient city offers the opportunity to experience different layers of history together.
