Story

Located very close to the city center of Aydın, Tralleis Ancient City is one of the important archaeological sites that shed light on the rich history of the Aegean. Situated in the Meander River valley, north of modern-day Aydın, at the foot of Paşa Plateau, this ancient city held strategic importance due to its geographical location. The foundation of Tralleis was carried out by Antigonos Monophtalmos, one of Alexander the Great's commanders, and his son Demetrios Poliorchetes in the 3rd century BCE, during the Hellenistic period. However, there are also findings suggesting that settlement in the region dates back much earlier. The city showed significant development particularly during the Roman Empire, when important structures were built and it played a key role on trade routes. A large part of the visible ruins today belong to the Roman period. One of the most striking structures of the city is a three-story, monumental gymnasium complex. This building was the center of education and sports activities in ancient times and showcases the engineering success of its era with its architecture. Furthermore, remains of a theater, agora, stadium, and baths are also found in the city. Findings obtained from excavations provide valuable information about the social and cultural life of Tralleis during its time. The city frequently struggled with earthquakes and managed to rise again each time. It was also inhabited during the Byzantine period but eventually lost its importance and was abandoned. Visitors to Tralleis, while tracing the magnificent traces of the past, find an opportunity to travel through time, especially by the mesmerizing atmosphere of the gymnasium ruins. This ancient city, spread over a large area, offers its visitors both a historical discovery and a peaceful experience intertwined with the natural beauties of Aydın. Information boards in the area provide detailed information about the functions of the ruins and the history of the city, enriching the visitor experience. Tralleis Ancient City is not just about stone walls; it is a living history book whispering the story of thousands of years of civilizations.
