Story
The ancient city of Adramytteion is located within the borders of the Burhaniye district of Balıkesir, in the Ören area. According to ancient sources, it is believed to have been founded in the 12th century BC by Adramys, who came to Mysia after the Trojan War. The city became an important port and trade center, especially during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Strabo states that the city was one of the most important cities of Mysia. Adramytteion also gained fame for its olive oil production and trade. Its authority to mint coins during the Roman Empire period demonstrates the city's economic power and strategic location. The city, which continued its existence during the Byzantine period, gradually lost its importance over time as a result of Arab raids and natural disasters. Today, the Adramytteion Excavation is carried out with the permission of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and in cooperation with various universities.
