The Ancient City of Cyzicus lies on the southern slopes of the Kapıdağ Peninsula, which embraces the Sea of Marmara like an inland sea, and today it feels like a hidden historical stage among olive groves and pine forests. Reached by a short drive from Erdek, this ancient settlement was once one of the richest and busiest port cities on the shores of the Propontis. Thanks to its strategic position, Cyzicus controlled trade routes opening both to the Black Sea and the Aegean world, and it flourished particularly during the Roman period, becoming a favored stop for emperors. Most of the remains of the city are now buried under soil and vegetation, yet the foundations of the famous amphitheater and temples still catch the eye. Ancient sources describe the amphitheater of Cyzicus as one of the largest in the world; today only fragments of its massive seating rows can be distinguished, but the slope of the terrain and the area it covers allow you to sense that performances here once addressed tens of thousands of spectators.
