Story

The Ancient City of Daskyleion lies near the village of Ergili in the Bandırma district of Balıkesir, on the southern shore of Lake Manyas, and is one of the rare settlements that allow you to read the multilayered history of Anatolia. Thanks to its strategic position, it was a natural crossroads opening both to the inland regions and to the coasts of the Sea of Marmara, and thus became an important administrative and military center for the Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, and later Hellenistic kingdoms. According to ancient sources, the city takes its name from the Lydian king Daskylos and came to prominence especially under Persian rule as the seat of the satrapy of Hellespontine Phrygia. The terrace walls, remains of administrative buildings, rock-cut tombs, and various architectural blocks visible in the excavation area suggest that this was not only a settlement but also a center where the aristocratic elite who governed the region lived. Seals, ceramics, and fragments of inscriptions unearthed here are silent witnesses to the intense commercial and diplomatic traffic that once passed through the city. One of the most striking aspects of Daskyleion is the clear presence of Persian influence in its art and architecture. In particular, bull-head reliefs and column bases reminiscent of palace architecture make tangible the traces of Persian civilization in Anatolia. Combined with local Anatolian traditions and Greek influences, these features turned the city into a true cultural meeting point. Today, as a visitor stepping into Daskyleion, you walk through the excavation area spread over gentle rises dominating a wide plain, and can imagine the terraces that once led to satrapal palaces, the tombs aligned along the slopes overlooking the lake, and the ancient roads stretching down to the shoreline. The tranquil view of Lake Manyas, the birdsong carried by the wind, and the distant village fields merge with the remains of the ancient city to create a timeless atmosphere. A large part of the site is still under excavation and study; therefore, each visit carries the possibility of seeing a newly uncovered wall, a newly examined fragment of inscription, or a newly identified architectural detail. Rather than a stop on fast-consumed tourist itineraries, Daskyleion is like an open-air laboratory where curious travelers prefer to wander slowly, exploring a landscape where history and nature intertwine.
