Description

Ayvalık Islands Nature Park is one of the Aegean’s most special protected natural areas, with bays and islands surrounded by olive-scented hills and rich marine life.

Story

Ayvalık Islands Nature Park is one of the rare areas on the Aegean coast where you can see both marine and terrestrial ecosystems side by side. Declared a nature park in 2004, the area consists of more than 20 islands, small and large bays, hills covered with pine and olive trees, and a rich underwater world. The park’s boundaries begin along the scenic route that follows the shoreline from Ayvalık town center to Cunda Island and stretch all the way to the horizon facing Lesbos. The historical fabric of the region is intertwined with its natural landscape. During the Ottoman period, some of the islands were used for olive groves, mastic trees, and small fishing shelters, while with the formation of the Republic the area gradually turned into a summer retreat. In the period of Modern Turkey, despite increasing construction pressure, the designation of the Ayvalık Islands as a nature park has played a critical role in preserving both the coastline and marine biodiversity. Today the area provides suitable shelter for the Mediterranean monk seal, hosts posidonia seagrass meadows, coral communities, and many fish species. For visitors, one of the most striking experiences is watching the silhouette of the islands at sunset. From high vantage points such as Şeytan Sofrası, Ayvalık Bay and the archipelago spread out like a map beneath your feet. In summer, boat trips take you to the coves where you can snorkel in crystal-clear water and observe marine life among the rocks. In spring and autumn, the park is quieter and offers an ideal setting for hiking and photography. While exploring Ayvalık Islands Nature Park, paying attention to conservation rules is an essential part of the experience. Lighting fires, pitching tents outside designated camping areas, and collecting stones, plants, or living creatures from the sea or the shoreline are strictly forbidden. The hiking paths cross olive groves and maquis scrub, sometimes meeting the sea and sometimes climbing to the hilltops. In this way, you can see different layers of scenery even on a short route. When combined with Ayvalık’s characteristic stone architecture and narrow streets, the nature park becomes not only a nature escape but also a cultural discovery route. By the end of the day, the time spent in the park makes visitors feel they are in one of the few corners of the Aegean coast that has managed to remain intact. Listening to the waves in quiet coves, with the breeze blowing under the shade of olive trees and the light smell of salt in the air, makes Ayvalık Islands Nature Park truly unforgettable.
