Description

Şeytan Sofrası is a volcanic viewing hill and natural formation famous for its sunset, offering a panoramic view over Ayvalık and the Aegean islands.

Story

Şeytan Sofrası is a natural viewing terrace rising on an old lava cone, a few kilometres from the centre of Ayvalık. It takes its name from the round hollow in the rock at the summit, known among locals as the “devil’s footprint”. The legends woven around this mark make the area attractive not only for its scenery but also for its oral culture. According to some, this is the very spot where the devil, expelled from paradise, first stepped onto earth; for others, it is a warning left by saints who chained evil spirits here. From a geographical perspective, Şeytan Sofrası is in fact an ancient volcanic formation. The rocks spreading down the slope carry dark basalt textures that recall the long geological history of the Aegean. Yet what stays in visitors’ minds most is the wide‑angle view. From the summit you can see the town of Ayvalık, the island of Lesbos opposite, 22 smaller islands scattered around, olive groves, coves, and a sea that turns golden towards evening, all in the same frame. For this reason, Şeytan Sofrası functions as a natural plateau for both amateur photographers and professional crews. The touristic fame of the area has grown especially since the 1980s. As the summer‑house culture in Ayvalık developed, watching the sunset from here turned into a kind of ritual. In summer, the queue of cars climbing the hill just before sunset shows how firmly this habit has taken root. Upon reaching the top, visitors often attach padlocks to the metal railings around the terrace; these locks symbolise making a wish, sealing a love, or expressing the desire to return. Thus, human stories accumulate here alongside the landscape. Şeytan Sofrası is a special stop not only for holiday‑makers but also for locals. When Ayvalık residents host guests, they almost always bring them to this hill and share childhood memories and stories of quieter days. Even on summer evenings the wind blows cool, offering a brief escape from the town’s humid air. In spring, when the crowds thin out, it is possible to feel the hill’s silence, hear birdsong, and see the Aegean in softer tones. Today there are small businesses, viewing terraces, seating areas and parking spaces on the site. Despite this, the natural rocky texture of the hill and the endless view that defines it have been preserved. What makes the visit unforgettable is precisely this balance: on one side, mythological tales nurtured by legend; on the other, the very real, very tangible light of the setting sun. Şeytan Sofrası is one of Modern Turkey’s best‑known sunset stops, offering one of the shortest yet most intense memories of any trip to Ayvalık.
