Story
Fatih Mosque, located in the Çayırhisar neighborhood in the center of Balıkesir, is considered one of the oldest mosques in the city. Although there are different views regarding the exact construction date of the mosque, the general consensus is that it was built during or immediately after the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. For this reason, the mosque was named 'Fatih'. The mosque, which bears the characteristics of early Ottoman architecture, has undergone various repairs and additions over time. Especially after being damaged in the great earthquake of 1897, the mosque underwent extensive restoration. The architecture of the mosque is simple and functional. Built of cut stone, the mosque has a single-balconied minaret. Its interior is adorned with traditional decorative elements of the period. The mihrab and minbar display beautiful examples of wood craftsmanship. Fatih Mosque has held an important place in the social and cultural life of Balıkesir, serving as a place of worship for centuries. Today, the mosque is still actively used, meeting the worship needs of the local people and contributing to the historical fabric of the city. The old buildings and narrow streets around the mosque enhance the historical atmosphere of the region.
