Description

Located on the foothills of Mount Ida, Güre Thermal Springs is one of Balıkesir’s best-known spots for healing and relaxation with its thermal waters and lush nature.

Story

Güre Thermal Springs lie in a small valley on the northern shore of the Gulf of Edremit, leaning against the foothills of Mount Ida (Kazdağı). In this narrow valley, where hot water steam mingles with the scent of pine and olive, people have gathered for centuries to seek healing and rest. According to local lore, the hot waters of the area were known in antiquity by both locals and travelers; during the Ottoman period the springs began to be used more regularly, and baths and simple accommodation structures were built around them. The thermal water temperature is usually around 60–65 degrees Celsius, and water from different springs is directed into various pools and baths within the facilities. Thanks to its mineral content, the water is preferred as a supportive treatment for skin conditions, rheumatism, and muscle fatigue. Especially in autumn and winter, when the air is cool and the peaks of Mount Ida are wrapped in mist, slipping into the hot water is one of the experiences visitors talk about most. One of the most striking aspects of Güre Thermal Springs is its balance with nature. On one side rise pine forests and olive groves, on the other the steamy silhouettes of the spa buildings. In the early morning, the steam that appears through the light fog settling in the valley adds an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. It is possible to take a short hike in Mount Ida and spend the evening relaxing in thermal pools on the same day; this makes the area particularly attractive for weekend getaways. Over time, modern hotels, guesthouses, and family-run businesses have spread around the springs, yet Güre still preserves the feel of a small, friendly town. As you walk through the village, you encounter old stone houses, narrow streets, and locals chatting in traditional coffeehouses. Some elderly residents like to tell how they used to come to the springs as children and how simple the pools were back then. These stories make visitors feel the continuity not only of hot water, but also of memory and habit. For guests, the experience is not limited to the water itself. Olive oil, soap, and other local products made from nearby groves are sold in small shops. Olive oil soaps used after thermal baths bring the region’s natural cycle into daily life. After watching the sun set over the Gulf in the late afternoon and then returning to the hotel for a hot soak, many feel they have found the perfect way to end a day in Güre. Thus, Güre Thermal Springs remain in memory as a calm refuge where body and mind rest, and where water and nature meet in harmony.
