Mount Ida (Kazdağı)
Description
Rising above the district of Edremit in Balıkesir, Mount Ida (Kazdağı) is one of the Aegean’s most impressive natural areas, famed for its mythology, rich biodiversity and cool plateaus.
Story
Mount Ida (Kazdağı) rises to the north of the Gulf of Edremit, its slopes stretching towards the Aegean Sea, and holds a powerful place both in mythology and in today’s nature culture. In antiquity, it was believed that the gods watched the Trojan War from here; the famous myth of Paris’s beauty contest also takes place on the foothills of Mount Ida. For this reason, since Homer, the mountain has occupied a firm place in the shared memory of Anatolia and the Mediterranean world. Today, Kazdağı is protected as a national park thanks to its rich flora and fauna. A significant portion of Turkey’s endemic species live at different altitudes on this mountain; the Kazdağı fir is a special tree species named after it. In spring and summer, as you walk along the forest trails, you notice that within short distances the vegetation and scents change rapidly. The cooling air, intense oxygen and constant murmur of streams offer visitors a rhythm very different from city life. As you climb up from Edremit and the surrounding villages toward the mountain, olive groves give way to chestnut, oak and fir forests. Below the slopes, draped in countless shades of green, the deep blue Gulf stretches out; especially at sunset, the silhouette drawn by the sea and the mountain etches itself into memory. On the uplands you can still see small villages, old stone houses and traces of traditional life. For centuries, local people have carefully used the mountain’s springs, herbs and forest products to sustain their livelihoods. One of the most powerful experiences for visitors to Mount Ida is the network of hiking routes and waterfalls. Plateaus and deep canyons such as Sarıkız, Şahindere and Hasancan offer nature walks of varying difficulty levels. The legendary Sarıkız Peak stands out with both its panorama and its stories interwoven with local beliefs. Near the summit, the air cools quickly; even in mid‑summer it is wise to have a jacket against the wind. Kazdağı carries a calm yet strong atmosphere where history, mythology and nature blend into one another. Here visitors do more than admire a beautiful view; they sense that Anatolia’s thousands‑of‑years‑old narrative is still being whispered on the mountain’s slopes.
