Amasra Grand Mosque (Fatih Mosque)
Description
A historical structure located in the Amasra district of Bartın, converted into a mosque during the Ottoman period.
Story
Amasra Grand Mosque is a place of worship located in the Amasra district of Bartın and is considered one of the town’s most important historical structures. The building was converted into a mosque after the conquest of Amasra by Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II (Fatih Sultan Mehmet) in 1460, which is why it is also known as the Fatih Mosque. Before the Ottoman conquest, the structure was built as a church during the Byzantine period and was later adapted for Islamic worship. The architecture of the mosque combines Byzantine stone masonry with architectural elements added during the Ottoman era. This combination gives the building a unique and multi-layered architectural character. Its location on the historical peninsula of Amasra adds both religious and urban significance. For centuries, the mosque has met the spiritual needs of the people of Amasra and has also played a central role in the town’s social and cultural life. Today, Amasra Grand Mosque remains actively used for worship and attracts both local and foreign visitors. With its historical texture, simple interior, and harmonious integration with its surroundings, it is regarded as an important part of Amasra’s cultural identity.
