Şerefiye Mosque, holding a distinguished place in the historical fabric of Bitlis, takes its visitors on a journey to the past with its majestic structure rising in the city center. The mosque was built in the early 16th century, specifically in 1529, by Şeref Han, the Beylerbeyi of Bitlis and a renowned historian. This period coincides with the zenith of the Ottoman Empire, when classical architecture produced some of its most exquisite works. Şerefiye Mosque is considered one of the most prominent and well-preserved examples of Ottoman architecture in the region. The structure, built of cut stone, showcases the craftsmanship and aesthetic understanding of its era. One of the mosque's most striking features is its monumental entrance gate, which inspires admiration with its architectural proportions and detailed workmanship. Inside, the large and high main dome provides spaciousness and light, offering a peaceful atmosphere conducive to worship. The mihrab and minbar stand out with their simple yet impressive stone carvings. Adjacent to the mosque, the madrasah and other complex units, which have undergone changes over time, indicate that there was once a vibrant educational and social life around the mosque.
