Story

Akşemseddin Tomb stands in a serene corner carrying deep historical traces, amidst the narrow and winding streets of Göynük district in Bolu. This tomb houses Akşemseddin, one of the most significant figures of the Ottoman Empire, the spiritual architect of the conquest of Istanbul, and the teacher of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. Akşemseddin, whose real name was Şemseddin Mehmet, was born in Damascus in 1389, pursued knowledge at an early age, and embarked on the path of Sufism. He became a student of Hacı Bayram-ı Veli, later began his own spiritual guidance activities, and spent the last years of his life in Göynük. Akşemseddin, who provided both scientific and spiritual support to Fatih Sultan Mehmet during the conquest of Istanbul and played a crucial role in its realization, was one of Fatih's most trusted scholars. He is especially known for his miraculous discovery of the tomb of Abu Ayyub al-Ansari. When he passed away in 1459, he was buried in the courtyard of the Fatih Mosque in Göynük, according to his will. Akşemseddin Tomb is a simple yet impressive example of typical Ottoman-era tomb architecture, built using cut stone and brick. The octagonal structure is covered with a dome. Inside, Akşemseddin's sarcophagus offers a peaceful atmosphere to visitors.
